Italian Renaissance walnut cassone

Description:  A heavily carved walnut cassone.

Circa 1560-1580, Florence, Italy.

Provenance:  Unknown.

History:  A cassone would have been commissioned by the groom in marriage and carried in the nuptial procession.  It was laden with the dowry of the new bride.  It was a cherished piece in a wealthy Renaissance household, often located near the marriage bed.

Dimensions:  21″H x 64″L x 19-1/2″D.

Condition:  Overall, fair with age-appropriate wear.  Some cracking to the top and front.  The original hardware is original.  The original key is present.

Repair/Replacements:  An improper repair to the back bottom is present.  An appropriate repair may be fitting for some collectors.  Removeable storage has been added to the interior. Of note, if a repair is requested, this will be completed following payment in full.
